How to Find your Chromebook’s MAC Address

Ever since their launch, Chromebooks have been a game changer! As more and more jobs become remote, a Chromebook is the ultimate gadget to work on. Lightweight, super-fast, and high-performing, these modern-day laptops can boost your productivity.
There’s one catch, however. To function seamlessly, the Chromebook must always be connected to the Internet. To do that, you sometimes need to find your Chromebook Mac address.
But before we talk more about this, let’s look at a few benefits of the Chromebook.
Benefits of Chromebook
The Chrome OS is known for its speed and stability
It would help if you had a reliable gadget to complete your work smoothly in the modern working scenario. Chromebooks boot up pretty fast and open or close programs in a second. The lags are very rare, and generally, the OS is very smooth.
The battery backup is impressive.
Imagine working from the most incredible places in the world and fixing your desk because your laptop keeps running out of battery. Well, that’s not a problem for Chromebook users. They offer around 9 to 11 hours of battery which is good enough to last you one workday and a couple of episodes of your favorite TV show.
Up-to-date security
Chromebooks are bolstered with default antivirus and are generally very secure. Thanks to that, you don’t have to worry about malware infecting your system and affecting your work.
What is a MAC (Media Access Control) address?
MAC address is a unique identifier in network connections such as WiFi and Bluetooth. It helps ‘identify’ each device connected to a specific network in basic terms. MAC is an acronym for Media Access Control. Every device connected to the Internet has the MAC address assigned to its Network Interface Card (NIC).
No two devices worldwide can have the same MAC addresses; it’s unique. For example, you will find MAC Addresses in this format 00:0a:95:9d:67:16.
Depending on your connection, these addresses can be of two types: Wireless mac addresses and Wired mac addresses.
As mentioned above, Chromebooks rely heavily on the Internet to ensure a seamless cloud experience. Thus, knowing your device’s MAC address and IP address is essential to sometimes connect to a WiFi network.
One benefit of Chromebooks is that their MAC address remains constant. This allows for more secure connections. There
Now that we’ve covered the topic of MAC addresses, it is also essential to know the basics of another set of addresses that help your laptop form a network connection: The IP address.
What is an IP Address?
The IP address (IP stands for Internet Protocol) is a unique address that identifies a device on the Internet or the local network connection. IP addresses are identifiers that streamline the communication between devices on a network.
The IP address format includes a set of four numbers, each separated by a full stop or period. The numbers can range from 0 to 255. A typical example of an IP address is 192.154.1.39.
There are different IP addresses: Private IP address, Public IP address, Dynamic IP address, Static IP address, and more.
Your Chromebook’s IP address can be found in the Settings window under the WiFi networks information.
How to find the Chromebook’s MAC address?
There are two ways to do that. Both are super easy and can be done without getting in touch with your network administrator. Let’s look at the first solution below.
Solution 1
1) Turn on your Chromebook
2) Open Google Chrome
3) Open the About System page in the Chrome browser.
To do that, you must type chrome://system” in the address bar of your Chrome browser. You can see how to do that in the image below:
4) Press enter, and a page that looks like the reference below will open.
5) Scroll down to the ‘ifconfig tab’ and click Expand
6) Look for the paragraph that starts with ‘wlan0‘.
Please read it carefully because this is where you will have to find the MAC address. It will be listed next to ether.
We’ve marked it in the red circle.
I hope it was easy for you to follow this solution. However, if it does not work, fret not! There’s another way you can find the mac address Chromebook.
Let’s have a look at it below.
Solution 2
This solution focuses on the network settings of your Chromebook. Below is a step-by-step approach to do that.
1) Hover to the lower-right end of your toolbar. Next, click on the status area.
2) When the information pops up, look for the WiFi symbol.
It will show you the status of your Wi fi network. For example, if you use a WiFi called ‘cafe’, the status will show ‘Connected to Cafe.’
In the reference below, the network’s name is a visitor. Click on this.
3) Upon clicking, the WiFi dialogue window will pop up.
Here, you can click on the network you are connected to. When you do that, the WiFi connection window will open. First, you must look for “Hardware address,” as marked in the reference image below. Your MAC address is the one next to it.
Once you find your MAC address, it will be easy to gain network access.
Chromebooks can generally connect to three secure network types: WEP, WPA, and WPA2. All these are wireless encryption protocols, but each one is unique and has different kinds of usage. Therefore, you should check which of these network configurations suits your work.
If the issue persists, you can contact your network administrator.
